For the past few years, I have been asking for board games as gifts for various occasions around the year. The latest game I received for Christmas is Star Trek Catan. A variation on Settlers of Catan, Star Trek Catan is a resource management game where you need to gather different types of resource to be able to build starships, outposts and starbases. The first player to gain 10 points by building various items wins the game.
If you are familiar with the original Settlers of Catan, the main difference in this version is that it includes 10 character cards from the Star Trek Original Series TV show and movies. Each character has a special power than can be used a maximum of two times before that character is returned to a pool from which you get to choose another character. This mechanic was actually first introduced in the Helpers of Catan expansion, but is an integral part of this game.
My two girls, aged 10 and 8, absolutely love the game and have been asking to play it non-stop since I got it. The younger one is even the one who has won the most games so far. I was not sure this new title would be a success when she complained that the rules took too long to explain before she played her first game, but she got quickly understood all of the rules once we got playing and has been doing very well at playing it ever since.
